May 2021

May 1 is Derby Day!  and Wisconsin Fishing Opener...  we did not catch any fish but did enjoy a warm (80) day on the pontoon...

So our new friend the Fox was back a few times this week.  He did manage to get a ground squirrel in the butterfly garden!  We have lots of ground squirrels right now, expect the population to decline.

We bought and planted a new pear tree, this is the 4th one we have had to replace.  Not sure why the last one died.  Must have been a spore, the tree bloomed last year with flowers then just started to die off.  It's always something around here...

May 8: today was Trout day!  Smoked lake trout for appetizers, that was sooo good and grilled Red Rainbow Trout for dinner also sooo good.  Easy to make and so delicious.  We will have to remember that one..

Sunday May 9: First Oriole and Bear on property today!

He seemed to enjoy the smell of the cocoa bean shells I use for mulch.  Wonder if he has been baited with Coco Puffs!

May 13: found these two cub bears up in a tree this morning.  One was trying to come down, then headed back up.  Not sure where Mom was, but be assured she was near by.

We need rain as it is so dry here in the Northwoods.  We did get a little bit on May 15 and was awarded a beautiful Rainbow, actually a double...

May 20: off to Ashland Wi for the annual birding fest. Of course it had been canceled due to Covid.  We will do our own fest...  It pretty much rain/misted all day until about 4 pm.  The temp was in the high 60's with no wind so we survived.  We were able to get 8 new year birds!

We checked into the Best Western on the lake again this year.  Nice hotel with a great view of the lake

A bit more rain on Friday. We went to Bark Bay where the rain was light.  this might be the first time we went to that side of the peninsula when it was warm and no wind!  Dinner was take out from Patsy's in Washburn.  Fried Lake Superior Whitefish.  Only 4 year birds today..

Saturday was quite warm (80) but mostly overcast until late afternoon.  We found 3 more year birds!  Our hope was to find a total of 7 or so.  16 in 3 days far exceeds our expectations..

Dinner and sunset at our hotel, Chequamegon Grill.

we both had the Lake Superior Whitefish.  Mine was pan seared with a delicious rice pilaf, Eric had panko crusted fish tacos.  Both were fabulous!

Our view while dining...

Sunday the temp turned cold!  woke up to 41 deg with wind chill it felt like 33...  Oh well time to go home.

May 30:  friends visiting...
