November 2024. Green Valley AZ, Harlingen TX for Thanksgiving

Back home!  after our busy day of checking in, unpacking and shopping we were able to relax on the patio and enjoy our view.

Saturday Nov 2: we did a little birding but had to do a Walmart run and get the car cleaned..  checked out our recreation facility. this one is about 2 miles away, has both a lap pool and fitness center..  another fine afternoon to sit out and enjoy nature.

Sunday we bought a 50" tv for the den.  we put the 40 " in the bedroom.  We watch too much TV to squint all evening.  all is good in the world again!

We saw this young lady riding down the road while we were birding..

deer at rest!

We went to a neighbor hood gathering, it was suppose to be on the driveway but the temp was a bit cool and we had some rain. So we sat in the garage. There is 8 houses in our gated hood, 4 couples showed up.  Everyone seems to be very nice. We learned a lot about the people we are renting from and of course a lot about our neighbors.

Tuesday November 5, the day the USA sank below, we are now officially a Racist, Women Hating, Felon loving,  authoritarian  country.

not sure if we can continue to reside here.  looking at our options.

Thurs Nov 7:

Coyote and Quail

hot tub and sauna day.  we lucked out and had both to ourselves!  that does not happen too ofter..  Hmm.. the dash on the Buick went out as we were going to the fitness center.  completely black!!  luckily we only went 2 miles.  have to take it in tomorrow.

we took the Buick into the dealership on Friday.  something is wrong but it is still drivable, so we have to bring it back Monday when they have a loaner car.  Glad it happened here in GV vs on the road down.    so we have never ever seen a Pusher before!  this contraption hooks onto the hitch and pushes the vehicle!  who knew???

sunrise is so beautiful when the clouds participate

Goats working the fields. makes you smile...

Tuesday Nov 12: we hoped they fixed the Buick.  Eric picked it up this afternoon.  We had a small black Buick Encore for 1 whole day.  Oh boy it is really small...

After much work and emails we got the outside fire (gas) pit working..

Thurs Nov 14: lunch with Jeff today..  1922 Pub was pretty good.  fun visit catching up with Jeff. He introduced us to a birder via phone.  we (the birder, Judi) will met up next Thursday for a morning bird walk.

Fri: Coati Mundi. their faces are too cute!

we went to the saltwater pool at 2:00 today.  we owned it!  how fun to own the whole pool and hot tub.

our temps have been warm and cold (cool) the past few days.  Eric found a small scorpion in the Arizona room!  we have to be better about keeping the screen door closed. lesson learned.

We are still learning about the house. I found an ironing board that is attached to the shelving in the primary closet!  Still looking for other items...

Tuesday Nov 19:  Jeff inited us along with 10 others over to his house for Chili.  We brought corn bread muffins!  9 people participated in the chili dinner.  everyone brought something to share.  A fun group of people.  5 ladies and 4 men..   A lot of talk about the election and the consequences.

Wed Nov 20:  we went looking for the elusive Elegant Trogan.  we did not see it last spring nor so far this fall.  other people seem to find it easily...

Saturday Nov 23:  we went to Sweetwater for a few hours then to Roxanes new little house in the east side of Tucson for a delightful brisket and bean luncheon.  We had a fun visit with Roxy and Cheryl and checked out her new neighborhood.  Roxy lives in Sherman Tx and just recently purchased a "little house" to escape to in Tucson.

Sunday Nov 24:  off to South Texas for the week.  looking forward to warm and humid temps!  Our journey to Texas was pretty uneventful.  both planes were on time with no weather issues.

We are Back!!

our little Buick.  its the same one we had when we took the big Buick in for repair!  a bit too small and very dark windows makes for old people to complain!

Our room at the Homewood Suites in Harlingen was not ready as someone had a dog that had an accident.  We went walking and shopping but ended up with a different room because of the dog accident...

Dinner at the Tipsy Tavern.  Great Hamburgers and service.

We did manage to get 2 new year birds..

Monday Nov 25:  hot and humid and windy is the forecast for today!  We headed to South Padre Island for the day.  Of course we made a few stops at a few of our favorite birding spots.  We ended up with 14 new Year birds.  Lunch at Joe's in Port Isabella, one of our favorites and it did not disappoint.

88 deg so a bit of pool time, although the pool was a bit cool for one of us...

Nov 26: off to the western edge of the valley.  We went to Hidalgo Pump house, Andzuldas park and finally to Bentsen Rio State Park.  we picked up 7 more year birds..

Nice lunch with Kim and Lowell at Bubbas 33.  Fun to do a bit of catching up before going to La Feria Nature park for a nice walk.

After getting back to the hotel we walked across the street to the Broken Tap for a beer.  We were the only people there at 4:00 am.  nice outside patio.

Wednesday we headed to Estero Llano SP.  our favorite SP in Texas.  We ended up with 7 more year birds for the day bringing our year total to 448.  We ran into a few friends, spoke with Steve so long that we ended up having lunch at Taco Laredo in order to get to Santa Ana WLR on tme.  The temp at Santa Ana was 91 deg...  a bit warm but a nice walk around our old stomping grounds.  We have so many fun memories in South Texas.

We did a quick drive by the last house we rented in Texas, on Moon Lake.  the neighborhood is growing..  a few new houses.

The hotel has dinner and wine and beer on Wednesdays. Nice salad mixings, chicken wings, chicken noodle soup and self serve beer and wine.  The wings were actually pretty good, a bit hot for me but we had two plates of wings and ate them all.  A bit of cheese and olives on the side and 2 cookies rounded out our meal.

Thursday Happy Thanksgiving!  Seems weird not being in Las Vegas but maybe a new tradition is in the works.   We are expecting a cool front to come in with strong winds, we really did not bring any cool weather clothes...

We headed towards Brownsville today.  it was warm until about noon when the cold front came in.  the temperature dropped about 10 deg in 3 minutes.  We did manage to get 4 year birds today.  2 birds did not want to co-operate with us...  maybe tomorrow?

Found this bird in the cemetery while looking for the Tropical Parula
 A stuffed Christmas Cardinal?

We went to a park to look for parrots coming in to roost, found 3 but only 2 count on E-Bird.

Friday Nov 29: our final full day in the Rio Grande Valley.   it's going to be cool and windy.   And yes it was cool and windy.  We got 1 new year bird and enjoyed a few quiet parks.

looking for an Eastern Screech Owl..  no luck today

we went to the Longhorn Cattle Company for a wonderful Texas dinner.  They have the best bean soup, the ribs fell off the bone, the smoked turkey was perfect and the brisket was moist and delicious.  the banana pudding was just OK.  a bit dry, no need to repeat.

Saturday we went back to Hugh Ramsey Nature center before dropping off the rental and getting to the airport for our noon departure.   Our flight to Dallas was a few minutes late and our flight to Tucson was 75 minutes late.  We arrived home before 6 pm.

We ended up getting 33 new year birds. a few birds eluded us again...

We sure did enjoy our short time in the RGV, great birding, great food and as always fun to meet up with old friends.
