Savannah Ga and Charleston SC

Friday Dec 4, 2015:  we left the Atlanta area this morning, temp about 35!  Glad we are moving on to warmer weather. Today's drive was a long one at 235 miles, all freeway so not too bad.  It took us about 4.5 hours to get to Hardeeville RV Resort just north of Savannah.

After hiking around for a few hours we headed to the Riverfront in Savannah.  Dinner at Tubby's

shrimp and grits (very good)

its been 5 years since we have been in the low country.  Love the food here.. There is a good chance we might overdose on Oysters and Shrimp but who knows when we and if we will ever get back here???    Of course after dinner we walked around and had to purchase some Pralines (both original and dark chocolate) and a stop to purchase at the Peanut Shop..

Sat Nov 5:  Off to Charleston, we stayed in Mt Pleasant just north of Charleston at the Hampton Inn.  We left early, stopped at

    to hike and bird. It was a cool morning but it was beautiful walk.

Time to go to Charleston for lunch.  We do not like to repeat restaurants but... it has been 5 years since we were here and only for two days so we picked our favorite places.  For lunch we went to Hymans Seafood for shrimp and oysters and hushpuppies. it was all soooo good, probably the best hushpuppies we ever had.

Took a walk around town for a few hours before heading to our hotel.  After settling in we headed north to McClellanville to TW Grahams restaurant.  It was a bit of a drive but...  only in town for two days.  We had a wonderful Flounder meal and our first supervisor Jawana (our first volunteer long term position) works there on the weekends.  We were able to spend a few minutes with her.  She looked exactly the same, 5 years later...  it was really special to see her and do a little catching up.

Sunday Nov 6:   our morning walk along Memorial Park was a bit cool but beautiful

Our first volunteer gig was at Francis Marion National Forest just north of Charleston.  It was fun to see how things had changed and not changed.

We made a quick stop here to see if Duane the other volunteer was here.  He was out for the day so we hiked around then headed to McClellanville for our bird tour.

We were looking for the Long Billed Curlew and we found two..

After our tour we stopped again at Buck Hall to see if Duane was back.. He was!  it was fun talking and gossiping with him for a few minutes.  He too is from Wisconsin, up near Ashland.  maybe we will see him this summer...

Time for dinner, we went looking for some steamed oysters..

Oh so good.  its great to be back "home" in the low country.  we did eat 3 buckets of oysters!  They still had some pluff mud on them but it was all good..

Monday Dec 7:  light rain this morning.  it was a really fun weekend in Charleston but now we have to return to the RV and Savannah..

We really enjoyed our time here in the low country.  Got 5 new birds!  about 10 new year birds..  lets hope it keeps going...

Tomorrow is time for us to move on, next stop Jacksonville Fl.  about 135 miles from here....
