TEXAS!

We finally made it to Texas on Saturday Nov 10th. We drove about 140 miles from Hot Springs to Atlanta Texas.  Its about 25 miles south of Texarkana.  We are staying 3 nights at

It is a small park by Texas standards.  As this is Veterans weekend the park is pretty packed.  There are a few less than 1 miles hiking paths and the park is on a pretty big lake.

No sun for the 3 days we were here.   There has been lots of rain as the trails were partly underwater and there are streams going right over the paths in some areas.  The weather is of course 20 degrees below normal!  Will we ever see 60's or 70's?

these are Beautyberries, not sure if they are edible for humans but the wild life eat them.  They were all over the property.

Many different mushrooms too.  This one has a blue tint.

Monday was a very rainy cool day, so what does one do when that happen?  We go to the laundromat!  Perfect day to hang out washing clothes.  We drove up to Texarkana to find a laundry and lunch at What-a-Burger.   While we were out walking this morning in the mist, a very loud noise startled us.  As we walked the road we came to a very large tree across the road.  So much rain has caused the ground to be over saturated.

Tues Nov 13 we headed to Martin Creek State Park about 80 miles south.  Woke up to temps in the high 20's and a little snow falling, nothing sticking to the ground.  We arrived at the SP safe and sound but cold. Temps got up to about 35 and overcast.  I finally gave in and put my long johns on under my flannel lined jeans.  Just too cold.  This park is also pretty empty, not sure if it is because of the weather or the location.  We are just south of I20 and not far from Shreveport La.  We did walk around the park, again the trails are all flooded so we walked the road. Lots of trees and of course on a lake. I had made a batch of Ham and Bean soup before we left home for days exactly like this.  Great dinner.

Wed: Temps were still in the 20's this morning.  But the sun came out!  makes a big difference. We headed into Longview for a wonderful walk along the Paul Boorman jogging path.  It was 3 miles one way, so we got 6 miles in before lunch!

Nice art work along the path

For lunch we went to Copelands New Orleans for wonderful Char broiled Oysters, Shrimp poboy, catfish with great pecan cole slaw.  too much food so we had to take some home.  After our big lunch we made a quick stop at another path that was also 3 miles one way but we only did about 3/4 mile one way.   Another cold night before we finally get out of this cold snap.  Tomorrow we head to Sam Houston National Park in New Waverly TX about 40 miles north of Houston.

Cagle Recreation Area is a FHU park with great TV reception but NO Phone or internet service.

We found some great hiking trails but again they are a bit soggy and parts still under water.  Our theory is that this is still from last years hurricane rains.  The trails are way too wet and have been closed to horses and vehicles.  We are able to walk a ways into the forest but it seems we always run into an area that is just too wet and we need to back track.

The campground is pretty quiet although full of campers.  and wildlife...

We finally found an HEB, our favorite grocery store.  Having a bit of trouble finding Lone Star Light.

Time to pack our suitcases and head to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving.  Looking forward to seeing our friends, sunshine and a bit of warmth.
