Finishing off November back in the RGV. We arrived home late on Friday November 15th from our Mexico bird tour. We did work on Saturday, we planned to work on Sunday but our friend Kim Galen was having a surprise birthday party for Fred in Mission (about 90 miles). So we did not work but went to the party. We had not seen them yet so it was a great a time to get together, although just for a short time.
Of course we spent Sunday stopping at parks, Hugh Ramsey and Santa Ana, to hike and bird while heading to Mission.
Tuesday Nov 19 we went to the Island, the weather was the most perfect we have ever experienced on the Island. Sunny, warm (78), and light winds. We finally got the Least Bittern! We have been looking for this bird for the past 3 years! He stayed out in the open for a bit of time so we were able to get good pictures.
We headed to the beach as this was a perfect day! too bad we did not bring lunch and chairs..
Wednesday morning we decided to take a long bike ride (15 miles) on Bayside road in the refuge. The first mile is gravely then the rest is asphalt, so not a bad ride.
On our ride we seen a bobcat, a large buck, some Nilgai and of course a snake!!
and a few of the other volunteers were out biking too!
Back to work, it was warm and humid and our vehicle did not have A/C. It was a very windy day that kept the fishermen away? Not sure why there was very few people on the Unit.
Began our packing for Thanksgiving weekend in Las Vegas. Not sure what all I am bringing, we hoped to bring one suitcase but will need two as one case is way too heavy!! Weather will be cool and maybe rainy so mostly long sleeve shirts and jeans..
One day at work we had a kayaker in distress, the wind was blowing very hard and he was stuck out on the bay. The Texas Game Warden came to the rescue with an airboat! Our work days are generally pretty uneventful. Talk to a few people, pick up trash and look at birds. No work this week as it is Thanksgiving.
