The birds are beginning to pass through our area and some have returned for the summer. Rose Breasted Grosbeak, Baltimore Oriole, warblers, and Cat Bird to name a few.
We are needing to mow but the rain will not give us a break! The weather is good for saunas!
Friday May 3 was the first mowing of the season. And the grass was pretty long! all of that rain makes our property pretty green!
Friday Fish Fry at Chit Chat in Birchwood. Blue Gill and Perch were both fabulous! not greasy, tasty and very good service. Weirdly we were the only ones in the restaurant.
Eric has been working on replacing the deck on the sauna... looking good!
Saturday May 4: We volunteered to help lead a birding tour in Spooner. Our group met at Tommy Thompson Fishery at 7:00 am. lots and lots of warblers flying through early. We left there at 8:00 to check out a few places. The rain held off until 9:00 then got too hard to be outside. Oh well, it was fun, there was 6 of us. not bad for the first time. We have a canoe ride scheduled on June 9, will see how many we get for that!
Derby Day! Mint Juleps! We were hoping to watch it outside but the clouds and cold weather kept us inside...
golf on Wednesday was cold and windy. that's my excuse for doing so badly!
Thursday May 23: off to Ashland/Bayfield for the Chequamegon Birding and Nature Festival for 2 nights. We only signed up for the Owl Prowl and Other Night sounds. No owls! but lots and lots of Eastern Whippoorwills calling and a few American Woodcocks elaborate courtship displaying. We did not get home until after 10:30! oh my.. the day was sunny and warm (when away from the lake) with the birds pretty much cooperating.
Friday May 24: Breakfast doesn't begin until 7! but ok since we had a late late night. The sun was shining when we awoke. a bit windy from the north... the sun was obstructed by clouds and the wind was from the north. not good for this cold blooded girl. we did manage to get a number of birds.
dinner was at Patsy's in Washburn. Friday fish fry, Lake Superior Whitefish. we got there just before 5 pm. the place was packed! we found a table for 2. long lines waiting for a tables. We always enjoy our fish at Patsy's.
Saturday May 25: after breakfast we headed to Superior Wi (60 miles away). We left the hotel at 7:15 arrived at our hotel at 2:30. A few stops to walk and bird. Dinner at Vintage Italian Pizza in downtown Superior,.. great pizza. Hmm.. they have a few places in Duluth, seems like we went to one before!
Sunday May 26: time to go back home... We took a quick trip to Duluth to do a bit of walking/birding. Not too many birds but 2 year birds were found! We stopped at Strongman for a wonderful smoked lunch. We arrived just before noon, got a table with no problem. Within 20 minutes the place was packed and a line waiting for tables. The ribs and chicken were very good.
Our bird count increased by 31 birds in Wi and 17 birds in USA for the weekend. We are very satisfied with our count! Seems we missed migration by one week. They changed the festival as it seems like the fest was held one week too early, well with the warmer/spring temps they came early.
As usual it always good to get back home. Unfortunately no baby sandhill cranes yet! hmmm... something had to happen as we have been home for more than a month and their incubation period is 28-32 days..
Memorial Day May 27: cloudy misty day. Pam and Terry came by for snacks and a fire. We had not seen them yet this year. great to catch up.
Wednesday May 29: after my golf game we headed to MSP for the night for our flight to Tampa on Thursday. Spending Eric's big Birthday (65) in Florida. We made a few stops including Fort Snelling National Cemetery to visit with Lloyd and Edie.
We also got one new year bird, will see what we get in Florida!!!
