So we have not had to mow in April and if the sun and warmth does not show up soon we won't be mowing any time soon.
Friday May 1:
Red Headed Woodpecker
after stopping at 3rd Base in Haugen for a drink we had dinner at Cousins for Blue Gill and Cod dinners. It was about 4:30 and the place was packed with old people! Luckily they had a table open for walk ins. Who would have thought? One last stop at Lincolnwood for a night cap.
Saturday May 2: Happy Derby Day! We went to Pam and Terry's to watch the race and dinner. I brought the makings for Mint Juleps. Good to see and hang with them again.
Monday May 4: no mow May is not happening at our house... the weather was ok, the grass was kind of long... First puzzle of the year is completed!
Tuesday May 5: Happy Cinco de Mayo Day... Spent the cold morning in Rice Lake transferring funds to purchase our new winter home in Texas! We close tomorrow. It's a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom double wide manufactured home in Llano Grande RV resort. We have stayed there many times and it's next door to our favorite State Park. After 15 years of renting in different states and countries we decided to settle down in Texas for the winter.
We did go to a local Mexican restaurant for lunch, it was delicious. Found these new potato chips at Walmart. They were pretty good!
Thursday May 7: still cold out... dinner with Rita and Rick at Strongman in Trego. Oh so good...
Friday May 8: the barred owl left the nest! oh so cute!
Monday May 10: might be the latest we ever put the pontoon in! its been too cold and windy, but today was a good launch day
Tuesday May 12: Momma Crane must be back on the nest. Only Poppy showed up for lunch today.
A rare visitor to our yard the Orchard Oriole
Wednesday My 13: BugBusters came out to spray for mosquitoes.. Eric had one attack him last night so good timing...
Dinner with Rita and Rick at the
The food was pretty good, service good and its right by our old cabin in Chetek
Sunday May 17: Scarlett Tanager and Red Headed Woodpecker came together to say Hello
Dinner tonight at the Steakhouse and Lodge in Hayward, BOGO free! Went with Rita and Rick. Fun evening, great food
Mon: lots of rain, thunder and lightning last night! A few hours of noise was worth getting an inch of rain, Off to Hayward for a bit of shopping, finally found some king size bed pillows, (been looking for a month in Rice Lake) and managed to cobble a jar of licorice together (again looking for licorice for a month)
Yes there are Good and Plenty in there too!
Thursday May 21: our annual trip to Superior and Ashland for the birding fest. We stopped at a few favorite places in Wisconsin before going to Duluth's Park point. The temp was about 45 degrees and the wind was crossing over the lake making the temp a bit colder. Although the sun was out, the birds were not happy with the weather and made us work really hard to get them.
After checking into the Hampton Inn we went to dinner at Boulder Tap House. the food and service was pretty good. We think we went to one in Ankenny Iowa a few years ago.
Friday May 22: off to Ashland today. Another cold windy day but not too sunny, so it felt a bit colder. We made a number of stops to walk/bird on our way to Ashland. Of course the closer we got to the lake the colder and windier it got. We went to Patsy's for White fish Fish Fry at about 2:00. great time to go as the place was pretty empty. The lunch was great and one of our favorite places to go in the area.
We arrived at the America Inn at about 5:00. Long day with no nap! But considering the weather we did pretty good on our bird count.
Saturday May 23: oh what a cold rainy day. at least it was not as windy but still colder than I remember being in years... We went up to Bark Point area then to Cornocopia for lunch at
for white fish tacos and fish chowder
a bit pricey but both were good. 2 tacos, chowder and 2 10 ounce beers cost $50! We made our way to the Legendary Waters Resort and Casino for a short session. Big Winner... I put in $5 and walked out with $50. that does not happen too often... a few more stops for birding then to the hotel for a much deserved nap. Dinner at Pizza Pub just down the street. The food, drink and service was great.. Pizza, salad, and four 16 oz beers was $38. much better on pricing..
Sunday May 24: Today was a much better weather day. We kind of repeated yesterday with a few different spots as it was not raining. The morning fog burned off by 8:30ish and the sun came out to warm us up. It was still a bit cool by the lake.
dinner at The Alley in downtown Ashland. Not too many places open so the place got jammed, service was slow, food was good.
Memorial Day May 25: heading home 20 year birds in the US with 13 year birds in the World. not bad considering the weather. Beautiful day, sunny, light winds and lots of birds singing. We got home by 11:00 as we only made 3 stops on the way home.
Ending the month with warm, sunny, and light winds, making for a great time to be here enjoying the lake and the property. Everything is so green. Have not seen the crane family since we left last week...
