June 2026. Birchwood/Texas

June is starting out with beautiful weather.  Both sandhill cranes came to get some corn today!  that means they lost the second batch of eggs...  no colts this year.

June 2: Eric's 67th B-Day!   Beautiful for a Birthday.  lots of texts, a few cards and calls.  We picked up Rita and Rick for dinner at Paul's Pizza Den in Birchwood.  We all ended up with sandwiches which were very good.  Fun dinner and we got to eat outside.

Late night visitor on the critter cam. he looks to be a big boy!

June 5: Friday Fish Fry, went to Pine Ridge at 3:30 with neighbors.  Always a gamble on how many people will be there and how long the wait can be...

June 6: Dairy Breakfast for Barron County

We headed to Hayward for a dinner, concert and an overnight stay at the Americinn Hotel.

We arrived at the hotel by 3;15, left for downtown Hayward at 4:00.  First stop was the Angry Minnow for a beer, walked the town but most shops close at 5:00 so we only had about 10 minutes to look at stuff..  Dinner at the Social Kitchen, outside patio, food was good but a bit pricey, service was great.  A stop at the 3 Fly Sisters for a beer before going to the concert.  The concert started at 7:30, we could not find out when the doors open. We got there at 6:50 and the place was packed..  guess it opens by 6:30?  The group was fabulous.  lasted until 9:45.  Great way to end Eric's b-day week...

Wednesday June 10: busy day..  blood draw at 7:00 am, drop off car for repair to hatch back at 7:30, Eye Dr appointment at 8:00.  A bit of shopping then Fish Truck in Rice Lake at 11:00!    Well that was the plan.  Storms when we woke up at 5:00, lightening, winds and heavy rain.  Lab work, dropping off the car and eye Dr went as planned.  But as we passed the fish truck there were two electrical trucks hanging by the food truck.. Not good..  We carried on with our business of shopping, walking etc before going back for food.  its now 11:15 and one electrical truck is still there...  hmm..  we did not have a back up in mind.  Went to Jimmy John's..  not what we wanted but it was good.  The fish truck finally put out a face book update to say they would open at 2pm then finally said today was canceled.  Now you may ask what's the big deal?  Well this truck only comes to Rice Lake every 4-6 weeks for only one day.   We were excited that they were coming on a day that we already planned on being in Rice Lake.

Little Bear:

Thursday another rainy day..  and a bit cool. we picked up Pam and Terry for dinner at Eagles Nest in Stone Lake then enjoyed a beverage the new Stone Lake Pub (which had burned down and been rebuilt).

Friday June 12: a quick trip to Eau Claire to sign papers and pick up a check for the Tree Farm.  Sold to the highest bidder!  Nice lunch at Casa Vallarta Mexican Restaurant

Thursday June 18:  off to MSP for our flight to McAllen TX tomorrow.  Dinner at Chevy's Mexican restaurant, we have eaten here before and the closest place that is not MOA or very crowded..

Friday June 19:  7 am flight, we woke up at 4:45 and was through security by 5:30!  Flight to Austin was longer than anticipated as we went around some storms.  Arrived in McAllen by noon.  To the new house by 1:00..  we did not know but the office closes at 1:00 so we have to wait until Monday to find out about the internet etc....

The house is perfect!  We only had a little look at it in April and of course the pictures but we are very happy.  they left a lot of good stuff and not to much stuff we will trash/donate.

We headed to HEB and Walmart for a quick shopping trip.  Then unpacked and hung around the house.  We did check out the Golf Cart.  the tires were a little low, so we drove over to the air station for a fill up!  All was good..

Saturday:  after a quick walk up on the levee, lots of mosquitoes! we did checked out a few things in the house, (how to turn the water off, where the breaker box is located and what are the switches, cleaning a few things, inventory of each room) before heading out for a bit of shopping.  We pretty much found what we needed/wanted.  Lunch at Reyna's in Mercedes.  It was very good service, the smoked wings were ok, the chopped brisket was good but covered in sauce, hand made fries.
Late afternoon (after the rains) we went to the pool, Had it to ourselves! and a shower (as we have not figured out the hot water heater) at the pool house.

Sunday pretty much the same as yesterday.  we did go next door to our favorite State Park for our walk, shopping, cleaning and pool time.  It was a bit warmer today than yesterday.

Monday our final day here for this trip.  Hot and humid!  the sun was out all day, we managed to go for a walk, stop in the office to get our fobs and info, a bit of shopping and afternoon pool time.  of course some more cleaning and checking out stuff.

now that we have our FOB's we can get into the buildings.  Nice Exercise room

Tuesday June 23:  up at 3:30 for our 5:20 flight to Austin TX.  We left the house at 3:45, 30 minutes to airport, drop off the rental car, no luggage so right through security by 4:30.  Our flight was 52 minutes and uneventful.  We had a 2 hours and 45 minutes in the Austin airport.  stopped for a not very good breakfast at Huts, walked around a bit.  Our flight to MSP was again uneventful for our 2 1/2 hour flight. WE ordered the same food as we did on the way down..

Met up with Bill Sweat before heading home.  of course just as we left the area it began to rain, rained hard most of the way home..

Wednesday June 24:  we are happy to be home.. although our bed in TX was comfortable it is a Queen and we don't do well in a Queen..  Good nights sleep tonight..

it took a day or so but all of our friends came back, birds, turkeys, critters and this beautiful Buck.

Saturday June 27:  highlight of the day was our ride to Sleepy Hallow Steam Engine Fest.  I just thought we were going to look for birds.  We walked around looking at all of the big and little tractors, farm equipment, car show and flea market.

the deer follow Eric like he is the pied piper

We did go for dinner with Pam and Terry to Birch Lakes resort.  Music and great food..

Sunday June 28: Steve G drove up for a kayak trip tomorrow.

very hot and humid day but perfect for the guys to float down the river.  I on the other hand stayed inside and cleaned out kitchen drawers..

Tues June 30: lunch with Linda and Danny at Somewhere Else in Hayward.
