We are having with raccoons pooping on our deck! They were eating the Oriole jelly and the Hummingbird food. We removed the food, the raccoons got mad and started pooping on the deck. Every night! we put the critter cam out to make sure it was raccoons. Sure enough we had 6! One female and 5 babies. After a week of that nonsense I put a radio out on the deck, turned it on at night. It seems to work after 7 nights.. No evidence of Raccoons on the deck!!! We left town for a few days, thus no radio.... when we returned after 3 nights, no evidence of raccoons on the deck!
I (Kathy) had a wonderful birthday weekend. The weather turned cooler with lower dew points so we could enjoy the outdoors.
our local chamber of commerce held a Band on the Barge party. We counted about 100 boats! Great fun.
Great year for wild berries. Picked enough Raspberries to make Raspberry Jelly and enough Black berries to make Blackberry pecan cobbler and blackberry jelly. busy time of the year.
The hot and humid weather is perfect for lazing on the pontoon. I have been practicing snorkeling and just getting into the water.
Friday Aug 12: we headed to Horicon Marsh about 300 miles from home. Our friends, Carolyn and Wallace S. were volunteering at the Wild Life Refuge. We were planning on seeing them, I did not realize they were leaving Aug 1, we would have worked harder to get there when they were there.
It took us about 5 1/2 hours to go the 300 miles. Of course we stopped multiple times to walk and eat and shop a bit. We stayed in Mayville at the Mayville Inn. Great hotel, great location and a great marsh.
It started to rain just as we arrived n Mayville. We went to Horicon for $1.50 draft Spotted Cow Beers then for a fish dinner. We were able to get out for a short walk around the area before the rain began again...
Saturday we spend the day in the marsh.
Hiking and birding. We did have a few drops of rain while walking. We did see a lot of shore birds but we are not good with identifying them. Dinner at the Mexican restaurant in Mayville was very good.
Sunday we began with a 2 hour pontoon birding adventure tour.
we got 34 birds. great tour, great tour guide. the boat was filled!
after our tour we headed north towards Marshfield. It was a beautiful ride. We stopped at
but we did not find the Greater Prairie Chicken! there were a few sparrows that took a lot of our time to identify.
We finally we arrived in Marshfield, after 5 hours and 180 miles.. we made lots of stops. after checking into our hotel we headed to the park/zoo..
They have new exhibit since we were here last year. It is really a beautiful enclosure for the two bears. Eric is a midget compared to the Kodiak bear!!
Monday: we got up early to head to George W Mead WLR to look once more for the Greater Prairie Chicken. Found some beautiful marsh and grasslands but alas no luck finding the bird! We had about 6 stops before getting home, the last leg was about 150 miles..
It was a great weekend, but it is always great to get home.
Oh those rascal raccoons! they have managed to eat almost all of our apples! They did eat all of the plums! They have stayed off of the deck, so far...
Well the end of August means Minnesota State Fair. We love the fair but it means the end of summer.. We drove the "new" Caddie to MN on Monday Aug 29, returning home on Wed night. For some reason my camera was not working!! no pictures from the fair....
Bird count: We increased our Life list by 1 bird to 546, although we did not see a new bird. The Western Scrub Jay has been split into two birds, California and Woodhouse's Jay and since we have seen both we get the credit! Year list is up 5 birds to 280 and our month list is at 111! not bad for August.
