November 2017 (KS, OK,)

Nov 1: Still very cold and windy today.  The temp on the truck was stuck on 37 for the past 4 days!! We headed out to walk in the wind along a lake.

this is what is called a Widow Maker!  Right over the bridge.

Beaver took on a tree a bit big and it fell the wrong way!

Not sure if the sign means no Gin or Whisky??

Harris' Sparrow

Todays walk was at

this Double Crested Cormorant was trying to keep the fish he caught all to himself.  Another was trying to get a taste.

Nov 4: drove about 105 miles to

nice park, large site with water and 50 amp.  It also has a laundry!

Of course we went to explore the park, not much on hiking trails but we managed to get a good walk in and a bunch (8) of sparrows!

No wind today!  the lake was like a mirror.  Got bird #575  a Short Eared Owl!

After going for a great breakfast in Independence KS we went to the

Not too many animals out and about but it had great buildings, statues and walking path.  Not my favorite but the monkeys were out

Cardinals were everywhere

After finding another hiking place we went to "The Little House on the Prairie" the museum was not open on Sunday but we were able to walk around and look at the buildings.

Not sure if we will ever see the sun again!  The wind did not pick up until we went to "the House".  We found a few more hiking places near our campground although not too many birds.

Can not believe it is Nov 6 and I am still wearing flannel lined jeans, two jackets etc...  Oh well...  off for a great hike

old graveyard?

we had to use a stairway to get over the fence

I am not too graceful coming back down

great walk but cold

this trail was only part way a trail.  we had to bush whack thru some tall grass

Tues Nov 7:  on the road again.  130 miles to Okmulgee OK.  Cold and misty drive today.  We arrived at Okmulgee State Park, Hickory Point Campground.  Older park but very nice and clean.

After setting up we went to find the

although it was still misting and cold (41) we hiked a few trails.  With this temp no one is using the trails but us, we did see a few deer.

Eric tried to get an Owl to show its face... no luck.

Nov 8: another new bird!  not too exciting but a new one none the less.  A Helmeted Guinea Fowl.

We are assuming these are domestic ducks of some kind.  There was just the 3 of them on the lake.

We had to try the burgers.  they were ok, the fries were good but the onion rings were great..

Thurs Nov 9: off to Colbert Ok, near the border with Texas.  still looking for warm sunny days.. woke up to temp at 32!  but we did see the sun yesterday afternoon. (see above picture). Pretty uneventful 145 mile drive today.  The sun was out the entire day.  We actually got warm in the truck, Eric threatened to put the A/C on!

After setting up we headed to Hagerman National Wild Life Refuge.  We had been here in 2013, great hiking trails.

On Friday we went back to the WLR

hundreds of Snow and Ross's geese

Oh look we found a snake!

For Friday Fish fry we went to

The fish was fabulous, the tartar sauce was phenomenal ( I am not a fan of tartar sauce but this was so good I kept putting it on every piece of fish).

Saturday Nov 11: Cloudy and a bit windy on our morning walk today.

Kind of an odd looking outhouse.  looks like they cut a culvert open

We visited with my high school friend Roxanne and her friend Cheryl in Sherman Tx

They made a wonderful brisket, beans and corn bread luncheon.  We took a little ride around the neighborhood on the golf cart.  The electric cart ran out of energy as we were going up hill and heading back to Roxy's home.  Eric came to the rescue by pushing us all the way back!!  Fun afternoon visiting with both of them and the dogs.

too cold for a dip in the beautiful pool.  maybe next time

Sunday Nov 12: today's hike was at Eisenhower SP in Texas.  About 10 miles from our camp.  The weather was perfect except for the clouds.

Should we continue our hike?

Oh yes we will.. great hike and the park was free today!

Got home in time to watch our favorite Football teams win! Even though cloudy it was warm enough to open windows and put the ceiling fan on!  Eric finally wore shorts today.  Hope this is the end of the cold windy weather...  I am hesitant to put my winter jacket away.  Maybe next week.
