We began the month on the lake! What a beautiful day to go to Long Lake for a cruise and lunch. We stopped at The Landing for a bite to eat then went to the sand bar for a rest and swim.
Eric went all the way in, I just to my knees.. Since it was Thursday we had the sand bar all to our selves!

Sept 2: What a beautiful harvest
The question of the day: Why does the battery in the fire/smoke alarm die only in the middle of the night? Never during the day, only between midnight and 3 am...
A friend (Roxanne) was in Bridgeview for a brief visit. She sent me a picture of my house when I was in High School! Its still yellow
Its fall time which means the critters are used to us being around. they all hang looking for corn. the pecking order is Sandhill Crane are in charge, unless a bear, coyote or wolf come along. the Papa crane has started to chase and sometimes catch a chipmunk. He also tends to go after the turkey and deer.

Sept 8: the baby crane is feeling a bit comfortable too!
Guys weekend got moved up a day as some of the guys had other commitments on Saturday. So they came from Thurs Sept 15 to Sat Sept 16. Luckily I had not made any airline reservations this year, only went to Chippewa Falls, about 70 miles away. So was able to add a day onto my hotel!
Sept 12: our Little Buck rubbed off his felt today. It was on this morning when he came by for breakfast. Off when he came by for dinner! Look closely you can see how red his antlers are.
Thursday Sept 15: maybe our final sunny warm day of the season. I headed down to Chippewa Falls for the weekend, Eric prepared for the guys arrival.
After a little shopping for necessities and checking out a few parks I arrived at my hotel at about 3:00 pm. Yes I packed for 3 whole days! Not a whole week.
Dinner at Milwaukee Burger Co. Their specialties are Beer, cheese curds and burgers. So I had a wonderful Octoberfest beer from Central Waters, fabulous Fair cheese curds and a great burger!
Friday: I left the hotel early, not looking at the radar! By the time I got to Irving Park the rain began! It did not last but about 40 minutes.

It seems the zoo was closed but the Bison were out and about.
The parade from Leinekugels to the Fair grounds began at noon. The Golden Keg was being taken to the fair grounds, lots of people and a band!
While I was watching the parade the Guys were golfing? I did not ask if they got their chores done first!

Saturday: I found a few new hiking spots today. both of them were pretty isolated with a few bikers and walkers but I pretty much had them to my self.
the Reserve has a 4 ft wide asphalt walking path, through the woods and along a prairie, with side routes into the woods and around a lake.

Tuesday Sept 20: we headed to Duluth for the migrating hawks at Hawk Ridge. We stopped a few times on our way and got 2 new year birds! our count for 2022 is at 400! we were at 398 for quite awhile.
We arrived at our hotel the Tru on the hill at 4:00 pm. Dinner at the Crooked Pint Ale House. The weather was very hot (80's) with a very high dew point (68). Good night to eat outside.
Wednesday: a bit cooler today and more windy. We headed up to Stoney Point for some hiking and birding. We arrived at Hawk Ridge at about noon. the sun was out for awhile, the clouds came in, a bit of rain then the sun came back out. We seen multiple kettles of Broadwing Hawks. We seen at least 1000 Broadwing hawks per hour that we were there! Also seen were Turkey Vultures, Sharp Shined Hawks, Bald Eagles and lots and lots of Blue Jays.
Thursday: a bit cooler than yesterday but not as windy and very sunny. The weather turned out to be pretty good. I was a bit overdressed but not too bad. We went to Park Point first thing for a long walk before going up to Hawk Ridge. The sky was clear and the wind was coming from the wrong direction. We did not see too many birds as they were pretty high up. We headed over to Hartley Nature Center where we had another great walk.
Friday: time to leave Duluth for another year... We will begin the day with 3 new year birds for this trip, maybe get another one on the way home? Oh yes, we did get #402 at Wisconsin Point! Lots of people waiting for the Jaeger to show up, but unfortunately they did not show up today. We were lucky on Tuesday when we seen it...
We found the Apple Thieves! We suspected it was Little Buck and a Raccoon...
With the freeze forecasted for the night we pulled all the Tomatoes and Peppers
Sept 26: our Bucks were playing... Kind of pushing and shoving and jumping. We have not seen our Crane family since we returned from Duluth! They left earlier than we expected. Hope to see Mama and Poppy next spring.
I had enough Green Tomatoes to make a Green Tomato Ragu. It is time consuming to make but oh so good.

A fun golf game to end the month at Lynndale. We did not do so good but we had fun and it was a beautiful day to be walking outside.
We ended up getting 4 new year birds. Hope to get a few more next month once we get on the road.
