We had a Shrimp boil to say farewell to four of our volunteers. The two couples are heading out this week.
Jan and Cathy cutting up the veggies
Kathy (me), Nancy peeling garlic while Dilly looks on
Alex looking very supervisory...
Al, Clay and Cindy are the volunteers that are leaving, Al's wife Carolyn is not in the picture. Miranda is our Ocelot Intern. Its always difficult to spend so much time with people then when they leave you don't know if your paths will cross again. Hopefully someday we will see both couples again.

John and Dilly getting this boil going.
final product! I made the corn muffins. Look at the size of those shrimp! It was all Good..
Thursday we were in charge of moving an injured Sandhill Crane to the local zoo in Brownsville.
We were about 2 miles from the zoo when our vehicle blew the water pump! needless to say we all had to be rescued. We finally got the crane to the zoo.
Friday we had a Volunteer Appreciation Day. It is normally in March but with the threat of a Shutdown they held it Feb 15. First we took a van down to Boca Chica to check out that part of the refuge and to walk the beach.
Dinner and awards were at Cactus Creek Ranch which is our (the refuges) neighbor. Great place, beautiful lodge and great neighbors.
nice fire
the Brown Shrits! Boyd, (refuge manager) Chris, (Visitor center manager) and Sarge (maintenance Supervisor)
We had a great dinner of hamburgers and hot dogs and lots of sides and wonderful desserts. Great day to hang with our fellow volunteers.
