We were able to get tickets to Sunnylands house tour for today. The tickets go on sale the 1st and 15th of each month for the following 2 weeks. I went on line on Dec 1st at 9:30 (they begin selling at 9:00) and was able to get tickets for today. All the tickets for the weekend following Christmas was already sold out! Tickets are $40 each, a bit steep but after our tour we say it was well worth the money.
Walter Hubert Annenberg (March 13, 1908 – October 1, 2002) was an American publisher, philanthropist, and diplomat. He built up his family’s magazine business with great success, extending it into radio and TV. At Sunnylands, his grand estate near Palm Springs, California, he entertained royalty, presidents and many other celebrities. He was United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom 1969-74. A keen philanthropist, he was a trustee of the Eisenhower Fellowships, and is believed to have donated $2 billion to educational establishments and art galleries.
A Purely Modernist Estate
In the mid-1960s, Walter and Leonore Annenberg hired Los Angeles-based architect A. Quincy Jones (1913-1979) to create a midcentury modern residence in Rancho Mirage. Jones.His signature style is evident at Sunnylands, where he used overhangs to shield the interiors from the direct sun, plus walls of glass to allow the climate's brightness to fill the rooms. Leonore Annenberg's deep love of flowers and nature is reflected in the cactus and rose gardens that abut the house and terrace. Interior rooms flow into each other with the same open expansiveness as the surrounding landscape.
The pictures do not do justice, the grounds are as beautiful as the house.

the house is about 25,000 sq ft. it was very welcoming, decorated in the 50-60's style. Presidents and other dignitaries have stayed here. Frank and Barbra Sinatra were married here.

the tour was about 1 1/2 hours with lots of fun stories.
of course it was lunch time, thought we would go to PF Chang's. my drink was soooo good. it is a cucumber/strawberry limeade! (would have been really good with a shot of vodka)
we ordered a few appetizers including the lettuce wraps. oh so good
Ray is back in town, we met him at the Art Museum then Lulu's for dinner and a walk through the Village fest.
