The cost was $14 per person, a 2+ mile boardwalk. We seen 49 species of birds a few alligators and a 3 raccoons.
This Red Shouldered Hawk was looking for dinner
We seen about 6 Painted Buntings
always a treat to see a Pileated Woodpecker
This guy had no clue that the Raccoon was walking right passed him. I yelled at him a few times but he was so focused he never heard me...
We did hear two alligators bellowing as we walked the boardwalk. At first is sounded like a large cat. Then we realized it was alligators making a racket.
Fri Jan 15: We thought we could do a bit of birding and lunch before the rains began. Well the rain came and went, always raining while we were out of the car. Needless to say we got a bit wet. Not a good bird day but a wonderful lunch day. We went to Little Havana in North Miami for lunch at:
The Worlds Best Cuban Restaurant! It was raining so hard that I could not get a picture of the sign so the place mat will have to do.
Eric had the Cuban Sandwich: (Sweet ham, roast pork, swiss cheese on a toasted cuban bread with mustard and pickles) Oh So Good
I had the Roast Pork, (Marinated with cuban mojo and slow oven roasted served boneless with moros rice and boiled yuca with mojo)
the flavors were so good, the pork cooked to perfection tender and juicy (the left overs will make wonderful tacos)
A stop in the bakery for a few treats
We stopped at the casino for a quick session. I came out $25 ahead, Eric $107!! this might be his year..
Sat Jan 16: Today was beautiful, warm and sunny. We headed into Everglade City to take a ride out from the Everglade National Park to 10,000 Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
this is our boat, we were the only two customers for the 9:00am cruise! Our guide and Captain were great.
White Pelicans
and lots of Dolphins, it is very hard to get a picture but I managed to get this one behind the boat
lunch time at the Havana Cafe in Chokoloskee
Homemade Sangria
another Cuban sandwich, a bit different than yesterday but Oh So Good...
I had the tuna sandwich that was very very good.
The Great Python Challenge is on here in South Florida. The Florida Everglades is an extraordinary ecosystem, unlike any other in the world! It is home to a variety of rare and unique wildlife including native birds, mammals, fish and reptiles. However, some reptiles do not belong there and pose a threat to native wildlife. To address this, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is teaming up with the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida to bring back the Python Challenge™ in January 2016, along with a Burmese Python Removal Competition that runs from January 16 through February 14 in south Florida. This exciting conservation effort will help protect the rare Everglades ecosystem and the animals that live there from these invasive, nonnative snakes.
We have a few hunters here in our campground....
last year they only got 68 snakes, hopefully this year they double that number.
Sunday Jan 17: Morning storms got us up very early. Tornado warnings in effect from about 5 am to 7 am. Luckily all we got was some heavy rain and a bit of wind. Sarasota did get hit with a tornado.
We were to go on a canoe trip with the Preserve rangers, it was cancelled due to high winds. So we headed to Marco Island, where the winds were even higher!
We managed to walk around TigerTail Park for awhile.
Tomorrow is the start of our 4 days on...
