We left the campground around 2:20 on Thursday Jan 21 for Key Largo. Its about a 80 mile drive. Once we passed the town of Sweetwater it began to look like south Texas. Lots of fields with fruit and vegetables growing and of course lots of nurseries and fruit stands. We did not realize that south Florida had so much land, we thought it was mostly water. The drive was beautiful, and with all of the rain we have been getting there are lots of flowers blooming.
We stayed at a Hampton Inn in Key Largo for one night. Very nice hotel with a Heated pool! of course we arrived too late to utilize the pool. The hotel is on the bay side, we seen a Manatee! If we come back (which we might) we will definitely stay here!
Dinner was good,
the conch fritters were very good (our first so we really didn't know what to expect), the fried Mahi Mahi was very good. the Shrimp, (fried, coconut and pan fried) were all OK. We had much better shrimp in Everglade City.
Fri Jan 22: woke up to rain... so glad this is the dry season... We knew it was suppose to rain all day, they forecasted the rains to begin at noon, it began at 2 am! Since today is our "travel" day, we stopped at a few places to walk in the rain:

We crossed the 7 Mile bridge during a hard rain... by the time we got to the hotel the rain had ended. we stayed at The Reach

Saturday Jan 23: Our day to roam.. The weather is pretty windy and a bit cool today. We had a wonderful breakfast at the Southernmost Cafe
3 meat omelet was fabulous and the shrimp/asparagus was wonderful
We took the hop on hop off city tour. The island is about 4 miles long, 2 miles wide. takes about 90 minutes to complete. Our guides were really good, we did hop off a few times, walking along the gulf side, it was very very windy... so we headed back into old town for the day.

There is so much walking in this little town, we really love our walking towns. Lots of shops, restaurants and bars. We did not hit any shops....

Sunday Jan 24: we were scheduled to go to the Dry Tortugas today but the cruise was cancelled because of high winds! we might have to come back down here again so we can get there....
Temps around 60, cloudy and less wind. After breakfast at the Banana Cafe we headed to a beach near by to walk around the town.
This pier was not secure enough for me to walk on, Eric went to the end
It was windy and cool, I had my winter jacket, scarf and gloves on during our walk in the morning.

The weather got a bit nicer, we went back to our hotel then we ended up at

turned out to be a great day for the sailors

We went to a wonderful Italian restaurant for dinner, it was close to the hotel, good service and great food.
Monday Jan 25: time to head home... love Key West, love the people, the food, everything about it. Next time we will have to get to the Dry Tortugas and some of the museums. We left at 8:05 this morning for our 180 mile trip, after a few stops
we got home by 5:30 pm.
Back to work tomorrow...
