I am beginning to take the weather personally. We left about 10 days earlier than in the past and yet our weather when we left home was like early November.
Our trip to Ellendale Mn was pretty uneventful. About 200 miles to a private campground. It is right off of I35 so we can hear the highway traffic all night but we want to stay near the freeway rather than drive 20 miles each way off to find quiet. One night is all we stayed. Our original plan was to spend 2 nights but the weather.....
We found this great meat market in Ellendale.. had to get a few things..
Oct 16 off to Lakeside Casino and RV park in Osceola Ia. We have stayed here in the past and again it is right off of the freeway. BUT it was booked full! Of course we did not find out until after we set up, so we had to find a different place to park for the night. They told us about a few places. We ended up at the Clarke County Fair grounds. 50 amp, no water or sewer but it was only one night so all is good. It was just under 2 hours from the time we arrived at Lakeside until we were set up at the Fairgrounds. Luckily we arrived at Lakeside at 1:15 so plenty of daylight left to take care of our issue. It was cloudy all day until we got set up at the fairgrounds! We did manage to go for a hike in the Stephens State forest area. Dinner from Hy-Vee was not as good as sausage and beans from Steve's!!
Oct 17: Off to Clinton State park in Lawrence KS. Hopefully they are not full as I can not make reservations at this park. I did manage to make reservations at all of our other stops until we get to the refuge. We managed to get the last Premium (50 amp) spot! There are a lot of spots open but we wanted a 50 amp. After we set up we went hiking and fire wood collecting. The lake is really high, so high that part of the parking lot is closed off and under water.
Oct 18: Beautiful day except for the wind. The sun was out and it was in the 50's to begin the day, 74 by the end of the day. We went to Bakers Wetlands for our walk. We were here in March of 2018 for a few days. Like today it was very windy but also cold, so today is better.. The last time we walked here we walked the wooded area, when a tree limb came crashing down and I lost my glasses! This time the wooded walk area is closed due to down trees!! But since it was warm out we were able to walk the open areas without too much issue. We walked about 5 miles before heading back home for a much needed nap. Although a bit windy we were able to have a small fire and watch all the weekend people come in and set up... always an entertaining activity.
Oct 19: rain overnight but was able to sleep with the windows open.. nice breeze coming in the window. We found a marshy area and ran into a birding group. The sun did not show up until way after noon today so the birds were not happy but we seen quite a few. Good morning for walking and good afternoon for hanging around the camp. Dinner was brats from Steve's and a can of Southern beans.... all good.
Next stop Oklahoma....
