Sweet Home Alabama

Wed April 6, 2016:  Beautiful morning in Tallahassee.  We hooked up and got on the road by 8:00 am EDT...  forgot that we would be driving into Central time...  We had a 269 mile trip today, most of it not on interstate, but it only took us 6.5 hours.  We did stop a few times to stretch out legs.

This sign was at the welcome center..  not sure what it means..  Is Alabama a watermelon mecca??

We are out of the high dew point/humidity area and my hair is finally going straight! All winter it was wash and go but now I have to dry, curl, mousse or just wear a hat!

We have not had to put the heat on yet, no A/C now either..  makes for great sleeping with the windows open.

We stopped at Peach Queen Campground, which is about half way between Montgomery and Birmingham.

We found these in our lake...  thinking they might be domestic geese..was hoping they were Greater White Fronted but they lack a few characteristics.

After setting up we headed to:

great place to walk..

Thurs: Quite a thunderstorm last night, it only lasted about 2 hours, high winds and lots of rain.  Today could be our last 70 deg day for a few weeks...

We headed to:

we were not crazy about the $1 hiking map...  not enough detail for us but we enjoyed our walk around the park for a few hours.

Northern Rough Winged Swallow

Brown Thrasher

the forest flowers were blooming...

it was a delightful day in spite of the bad map.  Nice pond/lake, good hiking trails once we found them and to top it off we found a new bird!  Louisiana Waterthrush!!!

After being in the south for 5 months I finally got my boiled peanuts today!  We love boiled peanuts but it was never the right time to get some.. Well today it was exactly the right time and they were fantastic!

Tomorrow we head to Nashville for 2 nights.  the days will be getting cooler and the nights colder.  we will have to switch to the flannel sheets and long pants...  probably have to the put heat on!
