Gun Creek COE near Benton Il on Rend Lake

Wed April 5, we arrived at our campground in the rain.  It was not a hard rain but it did have thunder and lightening cracking not too far away.

the rain stopped a few times when we were able to get set up and take a brief walk to check out the grounds.

Thurs  the weather turned cold and windy

we went into Benton for breakfast and a bit of shopping as the weather was blustery in the morning. We found the only restaurant in town, great little place filled with locals.  Not one person was on their phone!  They were all talking to each other and looked to be enjoying the company.  Not sure we have seen that scene in a very very long time.  Breakfast was good and cheap!

Time to walk the park

I had to wear flannel lined jeans, 2 long sleeve shirts, flannel lined jacket, gloves and hat for our walk. It was cool and as long as we were not near the lake it was not too windy.

We could smell onions!  There were lots and lots of wild onions/garlic all around us.  Of course we had to get a few.

A little bit goes a long way.  I made ham roll ups with a few of them for an appetizer.  They were pretty good.  Living off the land... The trees here are all budding, love the spring green.

next we head to Hudson Illinois just north of Bloomington/Normal.
