Las Cruces, New Mexico

Monday March 16, 2015

we arrived in Las Cruces after a 55 mile drive at about 11:00.  Set up, made lunch then headed out.

We found another of the "Trail of the Whispering Giants" Sculptures by Peter Toth (our 4th of 63)

off to

the trail was OK, all we really found was a lot of tumbleweeds!

finally off to the old town of Mesilla. it was a cute little place with some shops and one or two restaurants and their claim to fame:

Tuesday March 17,  Happy St Paddy's Day!

Last night was the first time in a long time that the furnace did not kick on!  When I got up this morning it was 55 outside and 67 inside!  At night I set the furnace at 60 so it usually comes on by 4 am or so.. its finally getting warmer!  spoke way too soon, cool and rainy today! but we had a good day.

We began at

to hike this trail, we only did hiked about 1.5 miles of the trail. it was a nice trail but the cold and rain began to come upon us

we seem to find the craziest places to hike!

We then drove up to Alamogordo to the

largest pistachio in the world!

too bad the grove was not in bloom..

not sure why they have this sign:

after picking up some pistachios we headed to

lots and lots of white sand!

trying to ski down the hill

people actually sled down the hills

took us awhile to figure out why no alcohol between Feb 1 and May 31

Spring breakers caused too much trouble and trash!

dinner time

a wonderful blue agave margarita

Eric's dinner was really good! with the green sauce..

Wednesday March 18:  final day in New Mexico!

After a wonderful breakfast at Cracker Barrel we headed to:

we hiked around on a nice trail for about 3 miles.  little bit of rain and cloudy.

next we went to:

its free for NM residents on Wed.  the man in charge told us that we were residents!  its an old fort that was decommissioned in 1890.

this road was the major road across the country.

the elements have taken its toll on the buildings

Next we headed to White Sands Missile Range.  before getting in we had to have background checks!
and fancy badges...  not sure why we are both Jr.'s or that Eric is John but.... we got in...

nice museum

another Pogo reference!

the sun finally came out!  time for laundry...

tomorrow we head about 150 miles to Van Horn Texas!
