Took about an hour to get here, about 35 miles, surprisingly shopping is within 2 miles of this place. I made reservations in Dec, and good thing because this place gets totally booked weeks in advance.
It's not as nice as Picacho SP as far as the grounds go but it is very nice and water available at the site for $30 a night.
we took a walk on the great trails. very well marked too..
found a new bird! Lawrence's Goldfinch! It is much greener here than at Picacho SP.
Thurs Jan 22: Headed back to the Gravel pit today, seen over 40 birds but no new ones.. A bit brisk walking out there, temps around 58 and windy.... where is the heat????
we ran across the Greater White Fronted Goose and his friend the Snow Goose
after a well deserved nap we took a walk around our park. There is a trail near some ruins, both Hohokam Indian and a 1850 ranch.
there are really big Saguaro cactus in this park. we are about 700 feet higher than we were at Picacho SP, not sure if that is the reason.
we did see 2 new birds on this afternoons walk! Green Tailed Towhee and a Gray Flycatcher!
Friday Jan 23: not sure where the warmth is at this year but it is not here in Tucson. woke up to temps in the low 20's!! Froze the water hose, did not know it was getting that cold. Highs today in the mid 60's. We are not allowed to have wood fires at this park... so it looks like our next fire will be sometime in March. Well not necessarily true, we will be going home in two weeks, I am sure Eric will have a fire most nights while we are home.
we headed up to Mt Lemmon this morning. we gained about 6000 feet of altitude. Went from desert to pine trees in less than an hour.

Good memories hiking in the Catalina's. Is the ski area still there? If you're looking for something fun to do in the area, a short day trip down to Tubac is fun. About an hour south of Tucson. Also the Aircraft Boneyard at Davis Monthan is kind of cool, looking at all the old planes?
ReplyDeleteSteve: there was not any snow when we went up there. they were hoping to get some this week. We are planning on going to Tubac and the Pima Air Museum sometime while we are here.
